Certloop

Adaptive NISM exam practice that firms buy to get sales staff certified

Employers

TL;DR Certloop gives mutual fund distributors, brokers and banks an adaptive practice tool for the NISM certification exams their staff have to pass. It generates fresh questions on each learner's weak topics and shows the employer who's ready to sit the exam. Employers pay per seat, because every failed attempt costs a fee and selling time.

The problem

If you sell mutual funds in India, on your own or for a distributor or AMC, you're expected to hold the NISM Series V-A certificate. The exam has 100 questions in two hours, a 50% pass mark and a ₹1,500 fee, and the certificate lapses after three years[1]. Advisory roles are tougher - Series X-A has 135 questions, a 60% pass mark and negative marking[2].

NISM says it has certified more than 26 lakh candidates[3], but it publishes no pass rate on its exam pages. Employers feel the cost directly though. A new hire who fails can't sell, and static question banks let people memorise answers without ever understanding the topic.

The idea

Certloop maps each NISM syllabus into topics and builds a large pool of practice questions, drafted with a language model and checked by a certified subject expert before release. Every learner starts with a short diagnostic. After that each session leans toward the topics they keep missing and explains wrong answers using the workbook concepts. Learners can practise in English or Hindi on a phone during the commute.

The manager's view shows readiness per person, meaning predicted score, weak topics and the date they should book the exam.

The seed pitched adaptive content for all learners. That market is crowded and the buyer is fuzzy, so I narrowed it to compulsory licensing exams where an employer pays and the outcome (pass or fail) is easy to measure. Certloop never claims to be NISM-approved, and every question is written from scratch rather than lifted from past papers.

Who pays

The learner is a new relationship manager, distributor or branch employee. The payer is the training or compliance head at a distributor, broker, bank or AMC. A fair price is ₹500–1,500 per learner per exam (our estimate), which sits below the ₹1,500 exam fee itself[1] and well below the cost of a retake plus lost selling days.

Why now

The investor base keeps growing, so firms keep hiring sales staff. AMFI data shows 28.62 crore mutual fund folios at the end of September 2026[4]. Language models now make it cheap to draft lots of varied questions per topic, which stops learners from memorising a fixed bank, as long as an expert reviews each one.

Market signal

There's no public figure for corporate spending on NISM exam prep. The firmest numbers are NISM's own count of 26 lakh+ certified candidates and more than 35 exams[3], plus the folio growth that drives hiring[4]. If 1–2 lakh people sit NISM exams each year (our estimate, not a published figure) then a per-seat product has a modest but real ceiling.

Who's already doing this

NISM itself sells more than 70 e-learning courses[3], and that's the incumbent to beat. Consumer test-prep apps sell NISM mock tests to individuals. Indian adaptive learning platforms[5] focus on school and entrance exams, and the best-known nonprofit AI tutor sells mainly in the US[6]. The gap is an employer-facing tool with readiness tracking for financial-services staff.

How hard is it?

Difficulty Moderate (30/100)
Starting capital ₹35–65 L
Time to launch 4–6 months

The engineering is modest. The hard work is question quality, since one wrong answer key in a financial exam kills trust and every NISM workbook revision means re-checking the whole pool. Selling into bank and AMC training teams also means long procurement cycles.

Licences and approvals

No licence is needed to sell exam practice, but the rules around the exams shape the product.

  • NISM exam rules. NISM sets the syllabus, fees and pass marks, so recheck them before every question-pool release[1][2].
  • SEBI Investment Advisers Regulations 2013. Advisers and their associated persons need NISM certificates, which defines one buyer group. Nothing to hold yourself, but know it before you sell[7].
  • No endorsement claims. Don't use NISM marks or hint at approval, from day one.
  • DPDP Act compliance before launch, since employers share staff names and scores with you. Show results only to the employer and the learner[8].
  • Company registration, GST once over the threshold and a Shops and Establishments registration for any office.

Building this outside India? The categories above usually have a local equivalent, so check with your own regulator.

How AI can power this business

  • Question drafting. A language model drafts fresh questions per syllabus topic, and a certified expert approves each one, so the pool grows without learners memorising a fixed bank.
  • Weak-topic targeting. The engine reads each learner's misses and steers the next session toward them, which saves study time.
  • Readiness forecasts. Training heads see a predicted score per person and book exams only for those likely to pass.
  • Plain explanations. Wrong answers get a short explanation tied to the workbook concept, in English or Hindi.

Don't let AI publish an answer key unchecked. One wrong key in a financial exam costs you the buyer.

Biggest risks

  • Incumbent moves. NISM could add adaptive practice to its own e-learning at a low price.
  • Small ceiling. The number of candidates per year caps revenue unless you add insurance and other licensing exams.
  • Answer errors. Machine-drafted questions with a wrong key will mislead learners and embarrass the buyer.

Our take

I like this for a founder who has trained sales staff in financial services and can sell to training heads. If you're hoping to build a general AI tutor then it's a poor fit. First prove that learners who use Certloop pass at a clearly higher rate than a matched group from the same employer.

Questions founders ask

Plan for roughly ₹35–65 L, most of it on the question pool, expert review and the first employer sales.

Is an exam prep business for financial staff profitable in India?

It can be if employers pay per seat and you prove a higher pass rate. The ceiling is modest unless you add insurance and other licensing exams.

Can I start a licensing-exam practice tool in another country?

Yes, most countries have compulsory exams for financial sales staff. Build around the local exam body's syllabus and never imply its approval.
