Checked client references and proof of payment for independent freelancers
TL;DR Paidtrace checks a freelancer's past projects with the clients who paid for them, and confirms that payment changed hands. The freelancer pays a small fee per checked project and shares one link with new clients. It might work because clients distrust portfolios, and nobody in India verifies the work itself.
India is the biggest supplier of online freelance labour in the world. The Online Labour Index found India's share of tracked online workers rose from 25% in 2017 to 33% in 2021[1]. With that much supply, a new client cannot tell a real portfolio from a borrowed one.
The tools on offer verify the wrong thing. Professional networks verify identity, workplace and school, but not skills or client work[2]. One freelance network marks some studios as verified without saying how projects are checked[3]. So a good freelancer with three years of direct clients and no platform history looks exactly like a beginner with a polished deck, which is a little unfair if you ask me.
You list your past projects. For each one, Paidtrace contacts the named client with your consent and asks four fixed questions - was this your project, what did the freelancer do, would you hire them again and may we confirm payment. Payment proof comes from an invoice you upload matched against the client's confirmation, or a bank or UPI record with the amount masked. Each checked project gets a badge showing what was confirmed and when.
The result is a public page and a link you put in proposals. Clients see confirmed facts, not star ratings. Paidtrace never scores skill, which keeps it apart from testing products and stops it judging work it can't assess.
The seed asked for rigorous skills verification with a focus on new skills. I kept the verification goal but narrowed it to past client work, because tests of emerging skills date quickly and other Indian services already sell skill tests.
The freelancer pays. My working assumption is ₹299–499 per checked project, or ₹2,999–4,999 a year for unlimited checks. Clients see the page free. Agencies that subcontract to freelancers are a second buyer, paying to check a bench of 20–50 people. Freelancers already pay for invoicing tools, and one reports more than 300,000 business users[4].
The DPDP Rules, notified in November 2025, set clear consent duties for handling referees' personal data[5]. That raises the bar for informal reference checks done over messaging apps and favours a service that records consent properly. India's share of the global freelance pool keeps rising[1], so proof matters more.
I found no public figure for spending on freelancer verification in India. The firmest number is supply - one in three online freelancers tracked worldwide was in India in 2021[1]. One invoicing tool's 300,000+ business users[4] show that freelancers pay for tools that help them get paid. That's adjacent, not this market.
Professional networks verify identity and employer, not client work[2]. One freelance network runs commission-free with hand-picked studios[3]. Invoicing tools help freelancers invoice and file GST but don't verify them[4]. Big freelance marketplaces rate work done inside their own walls. The gap is a portable check of work done off-platform, owned by the freelancer.

The software is simple. The hard part is getting busy clients to answer a reference request within days, and designing payment proof that can't be faked with an edited screenshot. Trust in the badge is the whole product, so one exposed fake does lasting harm.
No sector licence here, but you handle a lot of other people's data, so privacy is the main rule.
Building this outside India? The categories above usually have a local equivalent, so check with your own regulator.
Don't let AI decide on its own that a freelancer is a fraud. One wrong flag can damage someone's income, so a person makes that call.

I'd back a founder who has hired freelancers and knows how often portfolios mislead. If you want a marketplace then this is the wrong idea, because it is a trust layer and taking sides on pricing would damage it. Prove one thing first - that 70% of client reference requests are answered within five working days.
Plan for roughly ₹35–70 L, mostly on the product, the review team and getting freelancers to sign up.
No sector licence, but referee data falls under the DPDP Act and its 2025 rules. Avoid calling the badge a background check.
Yes. Freelancing is global and the product works online. Check your local data protection law on contacting referees first.
The free Paidtrace validation kit has the line-by-line capital breakdown, the effort scoring, the data-protection checklist, a 14-day validation sprint with pass/fail targets, a 90-day launch plan, 10 interview questions for freelancers and clients, and 5 assumptions to test. Download the kit →
Thinking about building Paidtrace or something close to it? The make-or-break work is getting busy clients to answer reference checks quickly, and that's the sort of thing I help founders test. If you need a hand, you know where to find me. Talk to Yash →
