TL;DR Mongolia has about 3.6 million people, most of them in towns and cities, and a high share online. Coal, copper and other mined goods make up the bulk of exports. The ideas that fit sell to mines and the trucking around them, help herders manage risk and livestock, or deal with very long, cold winters.
The market in numbers
- Population: about 3.57 million in 2025[1].
- GDP per capita: about US$7,100 in 2025[2].
- Internet and mobile: about 85% of people used the internet in 2024[3], with about 141 mobile subscriptions per 100 people[4].
- Where people live: about 71% lived in towns and cities in 2025[5], and about 27% of jobs were in farming and herding[6].
- Exports: fuels were about 61% and ores and metals about 26% of merchandise exports in 2023[7][8].
- Currency: the tugrik (MNT).
What founders here actually have to work with
The domestic market is small but unusually connected. Most people live in towns and almost everyone is online[3][5], so a phone app reaches people here more easily than in many richer countries. The catch is that 3.6 million people is a ceiling you'll hit fast.
The real money sits in mining. Fuels and metals are close to nine-tenths of goods exports[7][8], and the mines buy maintenance, training, safety checks and a lot of trucking. Selling to them is slow, but they pay and they renew.
Outside the towns, herding still employs a good chunk of the workforce[6]. Herders face hard winters, long distances and thin services, and anything that lowers the cost of a lost animal or a missed vet visit has real value. Personally, I'd pick one of these two worlds and go deep rather than straddle both.
Ideas that fit Mongolia
Every idea below was researched for India. Costs in rupees, UPI payments and Indian rules don't carry over, so read each page as a brief to rebuild for Mongolia.
Mines and heavy industry
- Furnacewing: Caged-drone checks inside boilers, stacks and tanks during shutdowns suit power plants and processing sites. Sell through the maintenance contractors too.
- Hotworksim: VR hot-work safety training and skill checks for contract welders. Mines with large contractor crews are the obvious buyer.
- Weldready: Simulator practice and remote review to get welders through trade tests. Match it to the certificates employers here accept [Requires validation].
- Taskfilm: Phone-filmed practical tests that show whether a technician can do the job. Useful when sites are far apart and assessors are few.
- Ashtrace: Truck-by-truck proof of where a power plant's ash ends up. Check what local environmental rules require first [Requires validation].
Trucks and long roads
- Freightindex: Lane-by-lane freight benchmarks and fuel-linked contract formulas fit a trade that moves a lot of mined goods by road. Start with one busy export corridor.
- Fogwarn: Stretch-by-stretch weather warnings for night trucking fleets. Swap fog and rain for snow, ice and dust storms.
Herders and livestock
- Indexacre: Weather-triggered top-up cover with every payout logged in public. Here the trigger would be harsh winter losses, not monsoon rain, and you'd need a licensed insurer.
- Agentvillage: Local agents who sell small covers and file claims in rural districts. Distances are huge, so lean on phone and agent visits together.
- Heatcollar: Heat-detection collars and a breeding desk for dairy farms. Fits the larger peri-urban dairies better than mobile herds.
- Milkchill: Cooler temperature tracking from dairy plant to shop. City dairies are the first customers.
- Hidetrail: Mapping the hide sources behind leather exporters for buyer checks. The same idea could work for wool and cashmere buyers [Requires validation].
- Coopstarter: A field crew that gets new herder and farmer cooperatives to their first loans.
Winter, distance and city services
- Winterbank: Seasonal solar-hydrogen storage for off-grid posts that run on diesel today. Expensive kit, so test the economics on one remote site.
- Skyclinic: Scheduled drone routes between hospitals and remote health posts. Cold-weather flying and aviation approval come first.
- Smogward: Measured clean-air bedrooms for homes during the heating season, with filter swaps on schedule. Check local air data before you pitch it [Requires validation].
- Deskmoat: A managed security baseline that gets small firms through suppliers' and buyers' cyber checks. Mining suppliers are a natural first niche.
Rules to check before you start
Legal entities register with the state registration office (Улсын бүртгэлийн ерөнхий газар), which runs online services for them[9]. Tax goes through the General Department of Taxation[10]. The Bank of Mongolia is the central bank, so lending and payments start there[11]. Mining, insurance and aviation have their own regulators [Requires validation].
This is a starting list, not legal advice. Check with a local lawyer or the agency itself.
Questions founders ask
Training and inspection services for mines and their contractors, such as Taskfilm, need a phone and know-how more than capital. A connected city market also makes simple online services cheap to test.
Do foreigners need a local partner to start a company in Mongolia?
I didn't find a source I'd rely on here, so check with the state registration office (Улсын бүртгэлийн ерөнхий газар)[9] and a local lawyer.
Is the home market too small for a startup?
For a consumer app, often yes. For a business selling to mines it's a different story, because fuels and metals make up most exports[7][8] and those buyers spend a lot.
