TL;DR Slovenia has about 2.1 million people, a GDP per head of about US$37,400 and far more foreign guests than residents each year. The ideas that fit serve hotels and guesthouses, look after a fast-ageing population, or help factories and homeowners cut energy use.
The market in numbers
- Population: about 2.13 million in 2025[1].
- GDP per capita: about US$37,400 in 2025[2].
- Internet use: about 91% of people were online in 2024[3].
- Ageing: 22.1% of residents were 65 or older in 2025, per Eurostat[4].
- Visitors: about 5.46 million arrivals of non-residents at tourist accommodation in 2025, per Eurostat[5].
- Currency: the euro, adopted in 2007[6].
- Starting a company: the SPOT state portal offers free advice through SPOT points, and notaries are authorised to accept company applications[7].
What founders here actually have to work with
The number I keep coming back to is the visitors. About 5.46 million foreign arrivals in a year[5] against a population of about 2.1 million[1] means hotels, guesthouses and tour operators are some of the most reachable buyers you'll find. Many are family-run, so they want tools that are cheap and simple.
Then there's age. At 22.1% over 65[4], care for older people is a daily concern for families and care providers, and services that keep people safe at home are worth a serious look.
Third, Slovenia is small but sits in the euro area and the EU single market[6][8], with Austria, Italy, Croatia and Hungary as neighbours. If a product works here then the next market is a short drive away, which matters for anything that needs a site visit.
Ideas that fit Slovenia
All of these were researched for India. The rupee costs and Indian licences don't carry over, so treat each one as a brief to rework.
Tourism and hospitality
- Ratecove: Pricing tools for small hosts fit the family guesthouses that serve most of the countryside. Swap the Goa rules for Slovenia's own rules on short-term rentals [Requires validation].
- Hotelgreens: Growing salad greens on site gives hotel kitchens fresher produce and a story for guests. It works best in resorts with space and a year-round season.
- Unwindbook: Honest listings for relaxation and wellness sessions fit a country where spa stays are part of tourism [Requires validation]. Make the vetting visible.
- Zonecraft: Hotels run locks, TVs and cameras on networks somebody has to keep safe. A remote service from Ljubljana could cover hotels across the region.
Care for older people
- Mellowpaw: Robotic pets and staff-led sessions leased to dementia day care fit care homes looking for calm activities. Run a pilot with one home and measure staff time.
- Twogen: Online game leagues pairing care-home residents with school teams are cheap to run and easy to explain. Schools and municipalities are the likely partners.
- Mobilityrent: Renting walkers and power chairs, fitted at home, suits families facing a sudden need. Check how health insurance covers aids before you price it [Requires validation].
Energy for factories and homes
- Notchwatt: Phase-by-phase energy retrofits for small factories fit a strong industrial base [Requires validation]. Replace the Indian financing scheme with EU and national grants.
- Glarefold: Film and shading retrofits for sun-facing glass fit older offices that overheat in summer. Measure before and after so the client sees the result.
- Panelfair: Fee-only quote checks for families buying rooftop solar give buyers someone on their side. Independence is the product.
- Faultpool: Shared fault models for solar installers help small firms spot failures early without handing over their data. Sell through installer associations.
Farms, vineyards and orchards
- Beebloom: Bloom-season bees and spray timing for orchards fit a country with a strong beekeeping tradition [Requires validation]. Partner with beekeeper groups, not just growers.
- Trellismap: Weekly drone maps that tell winegrowers which vines to check first suit hillside vineyards that are slow to walk. Drone rules come first.
- Cropscout: Village drone operators flying scouting maps between other jobs fits small, scattered farms. Start with one co-op.
Floods and infrastructure
- Floodfile: A flood-history report before you buy, build or lend fits buyers and banks who now ask about flood risk [Requires validation]. Build it on public flood maps.
- Spanlog: Low-cost sensor kits for bridges already rated in poor condition could suit municipalities. Public tenders are slow, so plan your cash for that.
Rules to check before you start
Companies are entered in the Slovenian Business Register kept by AJPES[9]. The SPOT portal and its SPOT points help with registration and advice[7]. Taxes sit with the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia[10], and the central bank is Banka Slovenije[11]. Tourism, health, drone and energy ideas each carry their own approvals [Requires validation].
This is a starting list, not legal advice. Check with a local lawyer or the agency itself.
Questions founders ask
Services that sell to guesthouses and small hotels are the cheapest start, because the buyers are many and easy to find. Ratecove and Zonecraft above need skills and contacts more than capital, and SPOT points give free advice on setting up[7].
Do foreigners need a local partner to start a company in Slovenia?
I couldn't confirm a local partner rule. EU citizens can set up a business in any EU country[8]. For other cases, check with a SPOT point or a notary before you commit[7].
Is tourism too seasonal to build on?
It depends on where you sell. Pair summer buyers with winter or year-round ones, or build a product that also sells in Austria, Croatia and Italy.

In Slovenia the question is often whether to sell to tourism or to the people who live here, and I'm happy to help you pick. If you need a hand, you know where to find me.
